Fleas:- Flea is a type of Siphonaptera
- Fleas are wingless, small and flat. Their integuments are highly hornified and their backs are covered with hairs and spines directed backwards, which enable them to catch their hosts’ hairs easily.
- They have a length of 1/12 to 1/6 inch on average.
- Fleas choose the places around their hosts’ nests and houses to spawn, so that incubated larva can easily access the wastes from their hosts and other organic substances as their nutrient. In serious cases, large numbers of flea eggs can be found on the sleepmats of cats or dogs.
- Both female and male fleas suck blood. 95% of species host on mammals as epizoite, while 5% live on birds.
Threats of Fleas:
- Flea invasion is a big disaster to humans and pets. Since fleas are hard to kill, and they suck blood from human beings and pets for survival. They cause risks to children and pets.
- During biting, adult fleas secrete saliva to their hosts’ skins or blood to stimulate their hosts’ immune system and it results in allergic reaction, such as tickle. The shin and the skin just above waistline are the most vulnerable parts. Flea bites usually result in red, flat scars.
- Diseases transmitted by fleas include Bubonic Plague, Endemic Fleaborne typhus and vermination, etc.
Control Strategies:
- Indoor Flea Control
Regular cleansing of indoor enviornment is highly related to preventing fleas from growing. It is essential to regularly use vaccum cleaner to clean all the floors, carpets, baseboards, pets bedclothing and furniture because it can kill part of the fleas and their eggs and allows the grow of chrysalis. - Outdoor flea control
